What is late-stage social media?
Honestly I think people like broadcasting themselves too much for social media to ever be "over". More than almost anything I think human beings want to feel like they belong and I think the internet mostly helps them with that.

I think I disagree on one thing here. Making fun of things is really fun, and that is why we share things to make fun of and laugh at. In my friend group some of our most quoteable inside jokes come from something goofy that someone in or out of our group said or did, and those little jokes aren't a masterpiece of artistic expression on their own, but they add plenty of smiles and laughter to the times when we hang out or game, etc. I want to see high quality content on social media, but I also want to laugh at and make fun of silly things. Sometimes we'll even go out of our way to see something bad. We have plans to go see a movie called "Afraid". The trailer indicates that it might be the funniest bad horror movie of the year, in our combined opinion, and I am more excited to go see that movie with my friends than any other movie that has come out this year I do obviously think it would be great to see these algorithms push lots of high quality high effort content. I just mean to say that I wouldn't want to put them down for showing me content that I do laugh at and enjoy, just because it is bad content.

Man I needed this. Due to the creative industry no-so-goodenning lately I've been unemployed, so I've been trying to post animations to RUclips to keep my hands busy. It becomes really disheartening when you put wayy too much effort into a thing, only for a robot not to show it to anyone because it's not skibidi rizz dance challenge or something. (I'm always one for self reflection, but the other numbers suggest those who get to see the animations like them, so I'll blame the robot hahaha) For those in a similar position I guess it's important to keep going for those who do get to see your art. Because I know there are people that enjoy when you earnestly put effort into things you enjoy, even if it's a silly idea you chuckled at while taking a dump.

I agree with this sentiment I think maybe happy sad. I feel like people obviously want a reward for the fruits of their artistic labor, but I think it’s just having that fire to continue and get better or refine your talent. I’d be interested in your opinion on the use of AI when it comes to art. Both as an inspiration/idea generation vs people using it to grift others into believing they created something by hand that is blatant theft.

Thanks for pushing back a lil bit against the cynicism that comes with spending too much time online as an artist. Reminds me of some things I've heard Bo Burnham say about it being okay to take time to develop an idea in obscurity instead of rushing to put it in front of people asap.

For me it's just so expensive. As a rapper you have to pay for studio time, or buy a studio. Then once you have the studio, then you have to pay to get songs mastered! Then you have to buy the beat. Then you have to pay for a music video. Then you have to pay to get the song promoted! Then you wait and wait but no money is recouped on the investment. Not to mention all the time it takes to create a song, which is money. I'm choosing to become a business man of fruits and vegetables.

She got absolutely clobbered as an Olympic competitor, but I do really appreciate the attention she brought to the craft and the degree to which she made it fun/lighthearted/accessible. I think a lot of people latched on so hard because it wasn't clear how she earned such a prestigious position. I think more than anything, it's rooted in envy. People bust their butts every day at their jobs for zero recognition, and then they turn on the TV and see Raygun flopping around on the ground _at the Olympics_ and think to themselves "Who got paid off here? Why don't I ever get anything like this?" From there, it quickly shifts to bullying because she "didn't deserve to be there." To be clear, I'm not trying to justify any of that behavior; just thinking out loud. tl;dr - Bullies, as usual, are unhappy people.
